Dr Joy Kabiru graduated as a doctor from University of Nairobi in 1991. She studied her Master of Medicine, Ophthalmology degree at University of Nairobi and graduated in 2001. She worked as a general Ophthalmologist at CCBRT Disability Hospital Dar es salaam Tanzania for 3 years before proceeding for fellowship training in Adnexal and Oculoplastic Surgery at the Eye Care Centre, University of British Columbia, Vancouver Canada and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, UK. She is currently working part time at Kikuyu Eye Unit and part-time does private practice at the Upper Hill Eye and Laser Centre. She also does outreach work bi-annually in Dar es salaam, Tanzania.

She is a member of the Ophthalmological Society of East Africa and a Fellow of the East Africa College of Ophthalmology

She has been instrumental in setting up the first Ocular Prosthetic service in the country and she works to improve socket rehabilitation services nationally. Much of her other work comprises Tear Drainage system disease management, Lid abnormalities management, Lid reconstructive surgery and Orbital disease management.
