Dr. Muchai Gachago graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.Ch.B.) Degree from the University of Nairobi in 2005 after which he worked for the Ministry of Health in Nyeri and Thika.

He then proceeded to do a Master of Medicine Degree in Ophthalmology (M.Med.) and graduated in 2011 after which he worked at the Kakamega PGH before joining the University of Nairobi.

He has since had specialist training and practice having completed a Fellowship in modern techniques of cataract surgery (phacoemulsification) from the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute in Orissa, India and an International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) Fellowship in Vitreo-retinal surgery from the Ludwig-Maximilians University (LMU) and Herzog Carl-Theodore (HCT) Eye Hospital both in Munich, Germany.

He has also completed a long-term Fellowship in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery from the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, India with major interests in diabetic retinopathy, vascular occlusions, retinal detachments, macular disorders including macular holes and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinopathy of prematurity and secondary lens implants.

Dr. Gachago has engaged in several surgical outreach activities to various remote parts of the country.

He is passionate about his work, strives to offer the best care to his patients through continuous research and training and is an invaluable addition to the UHEAL/ CITY EYE HOSPITAL team.
